Onion - Shallot
Onion/Shallot/Pearl onion was originated in Central Asia. Ancient books like Bible, Charaka samhita...say about this useful stem. In Greece it was used to fortify the Olympic Athletes. There are proofs for its usage in Israel, India ....about 5000 years ago.

Onion is in the family 'Lilliyecy'. It includes in the genus Allium. Onion is mainly 3 types- Big Onion, Shallot (Red onion) and Garlic (White Onion).

We use the stem part of the onion plant. It is using for cooking and medicinal purposes.

Small onions are beneficial for healthy life. It helps you to overcome heart diseases, plague, tuberculosis and even cancer.

Shallots are iron rich ingredient for curry recipes.

It is more suitable for children to achieve proper growth rate.

It helps to withstand anemia.

Onions are good for health of hair. Sulfur content of them keeps the hair strong, avoid hair fall and help to thicken your hair.

Onion juice with coconut and honey makes the hair beautiful.

The contents of shallot is as following


  • Carbohydrate- 14.9 g
  • No fat and Cholesterol
  • Fiber- 2.7 g
  • Sugars- 6.8 g
  • Protein- 4.9 g
  • Vitamins- A, C. B6 and foliate
  • Minerals like Sulfur, Magnesium, Manganese, iron, Calcium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc, Selenium and Fluorine.

You can consume onions through different dishes like onion sambar, onion chutney, onion pickles and many vegetable - non vegetable meals.

If you make a habit of including onions in your meal, obviously it will be healthful.

Among some people ulli/onion/shallot is not acceptable.

Ayurveda describes its medicinal value. But the truth is that every food is better when it consume in proper amount. So use it in accurate level in food recipes. 

Onion is also good for cholesterol, piles, injuries, beautiful hair.... Because of the iron content it is helpful to produce pure blood in your body.
