Tamarind/Valanpuli



Scientific name of tamarind is Tamarindus indica. It includes in the family - Caesalpiniaceae.

Tamarind tree is common in entire world. It came to India from Arabia. It grows both in wild and other areas. This tree can absorb the dangerous sun rays.

Tamarind leaves are very small. But they have their own medicinal value.

Tamarind fruits' brown colored flesh is very sour and it used in different dishes.

Tamarind is main ingredient in rasam, sambar, chutney, inji puli/puli inji....

Tamarind has an acid - tartaric acid. It provides the sourness to the tamarind fruits, leaves and flowers. Besides tartaric acid it has citric acid and malic acid. It also curries 20-40% sucrose, vitamin C, potassium and calcium. The fruit flesh has pectin also.

Tamarind tree's entire parts are used in Ayurvedic treatments.

Tamarind juice with honey is useful for throat infection.

Bath in the boiled water with tamarind leaves is best to overcome body pain.

Boiled water with tamarind leaves and curry leaf is useful for curing injuries.

Juice of tamarind leaves with coconut oil gives you thick hair. It is also helpful for surviving cold.

Diluted tamarind juice is useful for proper motion.

Tamarind is good for digestion.

Old tamarind is better than fresh. It would be in black colour. It enhances the liver and stomach processing.

The word 'tamarind' is in Persian language. It means that 'Dates of India'.
