Ulli/ Onion sambar is a delicious South Indian recipe for rice and breakfasts like dosha and idly. It is a common curry in my home and it is a favorite dish for many of us. What is 'fried ulli sambar'? Are you thinking about it? Answer is very simple. The frying of big onion pieces in a pan with some drops of oil will makes them more tastier and the onion sambar dish with these onions will be great dish. This is a style of making the ulli/ vengayam/ onion sambar recipe of Keralites. When I prepare the sambar with ulli for our breakfast or lunch, this is the usual way I experiment it. The method of making ulli sambar is very easy. It can be cook with or without coconut. You can use the sambar powder to make this type of sambar with ulli. I m here sharing the way of preparing ulli sambar curry with sambar powder.
Ingredients for ulli Sambar:
- Ulli/ Onion- 1 cup
- Dhal/ Parippu- 150 g
- Sambar Powder- 3-4 tale spoons
- Turmeric powder- 1/2 spoon
- Tamarind- A medium Gooseberry size
- Salt- to taste
- Mustard Seeds, Red chilies, Curry Leaf- to splutter
Method of Making Ulli Sambar:
- Fry the cut onions in hot pan with some drops of coconut oil
- Cook the onions and dhal in a pressure cooker with salt, turmeric powder and sufficient water.
- Make tamarind juice with water and put the sambar powder into it. Mix well into a paste. Keep aside.
- When the onion and dhal become cooked well after suitable number of whistles, add the above paste. Stir well. Add some water. Take care to maintain proper consistency of ulli sambar.
- When it boil well, keep it aside.
- Splutter the mustard seeds, chilies and curry leaves in some oil and pour it into the sambar. Mix well
- Ulli sambar for lunch or break fast is ready.
