Big onions are common in Kerala cuisine. Sambar with the so called 'savala' is a popular dish in Southern India. Even it lacks any other vegetables it is very tasty.
Learn How to make Simple Big Onion Sambar:
Ingredients:
- Big onions - 3 nos
- Red gram - 1 handful
- Coconut - half
- Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
- Sambar Powder - 3 tsp
- Tamarind juice - 1/2 glass
- Curry leaf, mustard seeds, red chillies - for seasoning
- Oil - 1 tbsp
- Salt - to taste
Preparation:
- Cook red gram in a pressure cooker.
- Put the onion pieces and turmeric powder with salt.
- Add enough water and cook for 10- 15 minutes.
- Grind the coconut into a paste.
- Mix it with sambar powder and turmeric juice.
- Add this mixture to the boiling curry.
- Splutter mustard, curry leaves and chillies in hot oil and pour it into the curry.
- Serve this hot sambar with rice, dosa, idly or chapati.
