Big Onion Sambar/Kerala Style Savala Sambar



Big onions are common in Kerala cuisine. Sambar with the so called 'savala' is a popular dish in Southern India. Even it lacks any other vegetables it is very tasty.

Ingredients:
Preparation:
  • Cook red gram in a pressure cooker.
  • Put the onion pieces and turmeric powder with salt.
  • Add enough water and cook for 10- 15 minutes.
  • Grind the coconut into a paste.
  • Mix it with sambar powder and turmeric juice. 
  • Add this mixture to the boiling curry.
  • Splutter mustard, curry leaves and chillies in hot oil and pour it into the curry.
  • Serve this hot sambar with rice, dosa, idly or chapati.
